club history
The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the most storied franchises in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was founded in 1917 as the Toronto Arenas and was one of the NHL original teams. In 1919, they were renamed the Toronto St. Patricks before adopting the Maple Leafs name in 1927 under the ownership of Conn Smythe.
Throughout their history, the Maple Leafs have won 13 Stanley Cup championships, making them one of the most successful franchises in NHL history. Their first championship came in 1918, followed by a period of dominance in the 1940s when they won five Stanley Cups, including a three-peat from 1947 to 1949. The team saw continued success in the 1960s, winning four Stanley Cups between 1962 and 1967.
The 1967 Stanley Cup win remains the last time the Maple Leafs hoisted the trophy, marking the longest championship drought among NHL teams that have previously won a Cup. Despite periods of strong performances, the team has faced decades of struggles, with playoff disappointments and rebuilding phases. The franchise is known for its passionate fan base and deep-rooted rivalry with the Montreal Canadiens.
